Early last Wednesday morning, Marvel Studios officially released the long awaited trailer for “Avengers: Infinity War”. The trailer was full of scenes showing what has happened to your favorite avengers since we last saw them. Here’s a breakdown and my predictions based on the trailer.

This article does contain spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok, Captain America: Civil War, and possible spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War.

The trailer starts with an opening monologue from different people in the marvel universe, detailing the idea that was the Avengers. While the voiceover is happening, images of different members of the avengers are shown. First up is Tony Stark, seen holding the hand of an unidentifiable body. Next is Bruce Banner in a crater in what appears to be in the Sanctum Sanctorum due to the next shot. Immediately after we see Bruce Banner, there’s a cut to a low angle shot of Dr.Strange and  Wong. Above the two are multiple holes throughout different stories of the building. Then there’s a cut to Scarlet Witch and Vision, who is now sporting a different form, possibly using the mind stone to appear more human. After that a shot of Thor is shown where he seems to be looking out of viewports on the Milano, the ship owned by Star-Lord and used by the Guardians of the Galaxy. The shot ends and we’re now shown Bruce Banner again, with more clothes, and Black Widow’s new look. This part of the trailer is to show the audience where the main avengers are now, after they split ways in the past few movies.

The Marvel logo rolls, accompanied by an amazing score which consist of the Avengers theme slowed down to tell viewers that this movie will be darker than the more light hearted tone of the first two avengers films. Another voiceover is heard, this time it’s Thanos as he says “In time, you will know what it’s like to lose. To feel so desperately that you’re right, yet to fail all the same. Dread it, run from it, destiny still arrives.” After the logo finishes, we’re taken back to the Sanctum Sanctorum where we can see that Tony Stark alongside Bruce Banner, Dr.Stranger, and Wong. Tony storms out of the building, looking back as he does. This could possibly be after an argument where either Bruce doesn’t believe him, or they don’t trust him. Interestingly enough, later in the trailer the same group can be seen outside looking just beyond the camera at something in the distance, possibly Thanos’ ship would be my guess. We then cut to Peter Parker on a bus, his Spider-Sense goes off warning him of danger. He looks out the window to see a circular ship descending on the city. Then the scene that I mentioned earlier is shown, with Tony and the group in the street staring at something. The scene disappears as we are shown what appears to be the Asgardian refugees from the end of Thor: Ragnarok, their bodies all on the ground as a figure walks over them. The figure is most likely Loki, who is shown in the next shot presenting the tesseract, presumably to Thanos. My guess is that Thanos invades their ship, kills some refugees, and stops once Loki gives him the Tesseract. The scene transitions to an empty shot of what appears to be wreckage, until a rift in space opens and out steps Thanos. He looks around and the scene changes. Spider-Man is shown doing a backflip onto what looks like the circular ship from before. He stands up and his eyes light up, giving viewers the first look at his new suit in action. A brief shot of Thor is then shown, he seems to be holding something together. The next scene shows something that is rather recent in the comics, and isn’t all that well known.

In 2013, a new team was introduced, The Black Order. They are a team of enhanced aliens who help Thanos with his tasks. Often being referred to as “the children of Thanos”, they are often his first choice of help. The team consists of four people: Ebony Maw, who can manipulate minds; Black Dwarf, who has impenetrable skin and super strength; Corvus Glaive, has increased speed and strength, and is also invincible when he holds his spear; and finally, Proxima Midnight, a warrior who is a master with a spear on top of her enhanced strength.

The reason I mention them is that the trailer features a very short shot of Proxima Midnight as she throws her spear at a shadowed figure. The figure catches the spear, and steps out of the shadows to reveal himself as Captain America. As the epic shot of Cap catching the spear is shown, yet another voiceover is heard. The voice belongs to T’challa, the Black Panther. He is heard saying “Engage all defenses, evacuate the city, and get this man a shield.” He is probably referring to Captain America when he says this, possibly referring to a new design of the classic shield. The trailer then cuts to show the Hulkbuster armor first seen in the second Avengers film, it’s movements don’t appear to be the same style of motion as previously shown however. It has a rough landing at first, then later in the trailer is shown flailing it’s arms in a desperate attempt to shake alien warriors off of it. It’s possible that it could be Bruce Banner inside of the armor, as evidenced by multiple things. In “Thor: Ragnarok”, Banner says that he’s afraid of transforming back into the Hulk due to his loss of control, and earlier in the trailer he is seen tinkering with one of the suits mechanical hands. By using the armor he could still be providing the team a way to bring the big guns to fight without the possibility of losing himself. The trailer then shows a couple fast shots of heroes fighting the alien army known as the “Outriders”. The Outriders are an alien race that travel the galaxy in search of planets for Thanos to conquer. We see Black Widow’s new suit, as well as a better look at Captain America’s new look. Immediately after we see Thanos grab Spider-Man and slam him into the ground with enough force to crack the ground underneath him. This scene is immediately followed up by a shot of tony looking worried, possibly the same same scene from the beginning of the trailer due to the background. However, it is important to note that this scene looks very similar to the scene from the D23/Comic Con footage where Peter tells Tony that he’s sorry. The trailer takes a darker shift next, with yet another voiceover from Thanos, saying “Fun isn’t something one considers when balancing the universe, but this does put a smile on my face.” This line was originally heard in the D23/Comic Con trailer, but with a scene of Gamora with tears in her eyes, whereas this trailer has it over multiple scenes. Starting off with vision having the mind stone pried out of his head by Corvus Glaive, as evidenced by the design of the spear, followed up by an infinity stone being applied to the infinity gauntlet. Finally, we get a scene of Thanos punching Iron Man, sending him down to the ground. He punches him so hard that if you pause the scene, you can see part of his mask fly off. The scene is then replaced with a show of Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, preparing to fight. We see multiple shots of the Wakandans fighting the Outrider army, possibly protecting the last infinity stone, the soul stone. The scene ends and shows us one of the last scenes in the trailer, showing Captain America, Bucky, Falcon, Falcon, Black Panther, Black Widow, and the Wakandans charging into battle. The scene fades away into the logo for the film, accompanied by the Avengers Theme slowed down into an epic score. The trailer ends showing Thor in his first encounter with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

The film promises a cast of over 64 main characters, and it won’t disappoint. Set to release in May of next year, Avengers: Infinity War already has millions of fans hyped.
