Paris Attacks Suspect Goes on Trial in Belgium

Salah Abdeslam is believed to be the last surviving member of the terrorist cell that mounted the deadly Paris attacks of November 2015. He went on trial on Monday; he lashed out at prosecutors and refused to answer any questions. In court he stated, “ My silence does not make me a criminal; it’s  my defense.” Authorities hoped for clarification on unanswered questions about the recent wave of violence that has spread across Europe. This case did not clear up any of the matter, however, as Abdeslam was unwilling to cooperate.

Abdeslam, 28, is standing trial in Brussels for an incident that happened four months after a coordinated series of Islamic State orchestrated assaults across Paris that killed 130 people. Prosecutors are trying him for his alleged role in a Brussels shooting in March 2016, this was when he was still a fugitive from the Paris attacks, Europe’s most wanted man. The prosecutors who accused him of helping organize the attacks and ferry former fighters from Syria say he, too, would have died if his suicide vest had not failed to detonate. Because Salah Abdeslam is refusing to speak when on trial, most families of victims feel as though they will never get the justice they deserve. The trial will continue until Belgian prosecutors come to a conclusion about Salah Abdeslam and his inhumane crimes.
