Our newest club, the Foreign Exchange Club offers students an opportunity to expand their knowledge regarding cultures and countries around the world. Mr. Mike Tomooka, a teacher at Buena High School, desired for students from different parts of the world to communicate and interact with one another in a way in which they are able to learn more about their origins in depth.

The club meets in Señor Tomooka’s room, 1320, at 3:00 PM once a month. The club is co-sponsored by Mr. Tomooka and Mrs. Sabrina Plamondon and is open to any student at Buena High School, whether they are foreign exchange or not, who are open-minded and willing to hear new, traditional, and cultural perspectives.

During their meetings, the club holds activities to get to know each other better. For instance, they play games such as Two Truths and a Lie, and they make sure to bring pictures from their home countries to share with the rest of the club members, explaining their culture, traditions, and what it is like living there.

The Club Officials consist of President Anna Sukowitzki, Vice President Nick Friemer, Secretary Nozomi Kondo, and Treasurer Taina Feiz. Sponsor Sabrina Plamondon expresses why she believes this club is beneficial for students as she explains, “Interacting with students of different backgrounds gives them first-hand experience of other cultures.” She continues by acknowledging how foreign exchange students may have a difficult time adjusting to the American culture and way of life as she states, “This club benefits both sides, meaning they can learn more about each other’s traditions but they can also overcome the cultural shock after moving to the U.S.” Junior Nick Friemer explains his experience regarding the club so far saying, “I like being part of this club because I can communicate with other exchange students about their experiences, learn more about different cultures, and I am even able to try food from other countries!”

The club’s next meeting will take place November 20th to hold a pre-Thanksgiving feast and celebration, having members bring a dish or dessert of their choosing. The members of this club, overall, describe Foreign Exchange club as one of the most fun clubs at Buena High School. In their meetings, they get to eat different foods and snacks, play games, and simply have an enjoyable time in each other’s company!
