After a long week of counting ballots, Kyrsten Sinema announced her Arizona Senate win a week after our country’s election night. Sinema was the Democratic nominee against Republican Martha McSally and the Green party nominee, Angela Green. The winner was too close to call, with McSally just barely having more votes initially. Sinema pulled to the lead the following Saturday after the midterm elections, and eventually won after all the ballots had been counted. It is clear Arizona was divided on who should win the role of Arizona Senator, as shown by the too-close-to-call race, and Buena was no different.

For Senior Jordan Scott, this was her first time voting. Scott says, “I care a lot about who’s in charge of here in Arizona, and the country. Voting was really important to me. I really think that Kyrsten Sinema is best for Arizona, and I was glad to hear she won.” Other students felt similarly, but not all.

Junior Frank Miller explains, “I wasn’t able to vote since I’m not old enough yet. I did have a candidate who I liked more, McSally. I felt like Kyrsten Sinema just didn’t care about Arizona as much as McSally would.”

Some students just didn’t care at all about the midterm elections. Junior Charles Hayes says, “To be honest, I wasn’t really paying attention to the election. It wasn’t really important to me whoever won. I think it’s great people are passionate about Arizona’s elections, but I just wasn’t.”

Despite the varying opinions of students around Buena, fortunately many are able to create relationships and congratulate those who won in the 2018 midterm elections despite their differences.
