Recently the DECA Club at Buena High School competed in a regional competition at the Pima College in Tucson, Arizona. Multiple high school competitors were there as well, like: Catalina Foothills, Douglas and St. David. Several students from our Buena High School scored impressive placements in Regionals

, which gives them the opportunity to take the next step forward in going into February’s state competitions!

So wait pause, what is DECA? DECA is a ‘not-for-profit career and technical student organization’ with more than 215,000 members all around the world, including: Canada, China, Germany and many other countries. Several thousands of different high schools compete against each other in various marketing competitions that help prepare them for their future, while discovering new paths and new opportunities.

Whilst interviewing the DECA Club Advisor, Mrs. Katie Tinnell, she helped give me a small look into a bit of what they do as a team. “The DECA Club usually meets in RTI as a club and also has class first hour together where they can take care of their current business duties.”  During the competition there are a series of marketing categories that each student can compete in. For example; Principles Of Business Administration, Apparel and Accessories marketing, Team Decision Making and many others. As the DECA Club prepares themselves to go into competition, they practice with sample role-plays and scenarios, similar to what the judges present to them.

This year regional competitions were held at the Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona. Mrs. Tinnell expressed how competitions are held behind closed doors, “It was interesting as it was my first time going, they just check into their event and do their thing.” She went on, “There isn’t really an audience, you can’t watch the competitions, it’s more of a one on one with the judges.” Club President James Bias, a senior this year at Buena High has been involved with DECA for all four of his highschool years. He was happy to share what typically goes down during competition; “We get a case study, and then we have to read it, come up with props and go through a performance indicator sheet and answer all the questions on there,” Bias continued “So then, I present to the judge our business plan for this case study that I got 30 minutes ago.” Although, depending on whether or not you are in a group affects the amount of time you have to complete your case study.

With more than 3,500 high schools participating, DECA helps future entrepreneurs explore new options and opportunities on a day to day basis.  “I would definitely recommend others to join, by taking a marketing class it prepares you for the future in everything you do.” Bias explained, “If you want to pursue a business career, if you want to get better interviewing skills, you’ll have better self confidence. DECA is definitely the place for you.” Congratulations to our Buena DECA club members for doing such a great job during Regional Competitions this year and good luck in February’s state competitions!

The DECA squad!
