Everyone wears jeans.

After the rise of skinny jeans, it became easy to ignore the oddly named jean names that began to pop up. But as fashion continued to evolve, it is now hard not to notice all the “relational jeans” that are seemingly everywhere now. Boyfriend, girlfriend, and mom jeans have all been thrust into the spotlight, and it can be hard to understand the difference between the three or even what they all are. So what are they? And what’s the difference between them?

Boyfriend Jeans

Boyfriend jeans seem to be the most popular of the three types. Hollister defines them as, “An ultra-comfortable, loose fit that hits above the ankle.” Essentially, these jeans are meant to take an existing pair of a boy’s jeans, hence the name, and creating them into a pair of fashionable, cropped jeans.

Girlfriend Jeans

Girlfriend jeans are a little more confusing for many. Online, girlfriend jeans are often just labeled as cropped jeans. So why are they named girlfriend jeans instead of just cropped? Keda Rich explains girlfriend jeans as, “a more feminine version of the boyfriend jean cut.” So yes, they are cropped, but they take boyfriend jeans to the next level without quite being skinny jeans.

Mom Jeans

A staple to many “aesthetic” outfits, mom jeans have shown up all over high schools and colleges across the world. Levi’s defines mom jeans as, “They hug your waist and hips for some flattering body-love, and don’t miss a beat when you need effortless casual style.” But how do they differ from boyfriend and girlfriend jeans? Mom jeans are most often high-waisted, covering the belly button and some added longer back pockets. After ironically being a mocked clothing piece by younger generations, mom jeans are now an iconic article of clothing for teenagers and young adults.
