Students are gearing up to put on the final production of the school year, Hairspray. Produced by Buena Fine Arts Productions and directed by Carrie Duerk, over forty students are beginning their preparations for the musical. Many of these participants are in Theatre Performance 1 or in no theatre classes at all; anyone and everyone is always welcome to audition for productions and can inquire on learning about the technical aspect of a show. As the show creeps closer, actors begin to develop their characters, while technicians work on lighting and sound design.

Hairspray, a cult classic movie and musical, is one that many students are excited to be in. In the musical, the lead character, Tracy, is led by Bailey Silk, a first-time actress. Students such as Charles Stalling, Mario Correa, and Luz Marquez have been in multiple shows in the past. Junior Anthony Rodriguez expresses with contentment, “Hairspray will be one of the biggest Buena shows ever. We are using the dances from the original Broadway version, and we have a cast of amazing performers from Buena,” he continues by urging the people of Buena to come and support the play the students of Fine Arts have worked so deliberately to bring to life. He adds. “I am excited to be a part of this amazing production and I hope that a lot of people come to experience the amazing story of Hairspray.”

While the actors work tenaciously on forming characters and their relationships, technicians will work to dress the stage for those characters to come to life in. Aspects like costumes, lighting, scenic, and audio are all working together to immerse audience members in the town of Baltimore. The Assistant Stage Manager, Junior Troy Rawlings, is one of the key people responsible for working with the director in order to successfully run the show, along with Stage Manager Kayla Youman. When asked how he planned on making this one of Buena´s best productions yet, Troy explained, “We bought the original Broadway choreography and we are renting costumes, so I think that’s something to look forward to.” Hairspray is a fantastic musical that is open for the general public as well as students and parents of Buena High School. Please come and support Buena Fine Arts and watch the show on Friday, May 4 at 7:00 P.M. & Saturday, May 5 at 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M in the Klein Center for the Performing Arts.
