As college looms around the corner, so does another part of the college experience: orientation. College orientation is a major stepping stone between high school and college. For some Buena High School seniors, they have already taken that big step.

Senior Sara Reyes has already attended orientation for her first choice school, Arizona State University. “It was a really great experience,” she says. At Arizona State University, the orientation consisted of a welcome to the university and individual college, picking her classes, and getting her ID card for next school year. “It felt like I was really getting close to my first day of college, with picking my classes and all that. It’s really exciting!” she added.

Like Reyes, many students felt a sense of excitement over attending their freshman orientation. Senior Taylor Greene attended orientation with Reyes, and they felt a shared feeling of excitement of what’s to come. “I’ve been looking forward to college for a long time, so this was a really great experience to have before fall classes start,” she says. Orientation is also a great way to meet other students you’ll be attending college with. “I got to meet some really cool people there too which is great. I think it’s important to make friends before going to college to make it a bit easier,” Green adds.

Senior Maddie Watson was more hesitant about attending orientation, but found it helpful in the end. “I was a little bit nervous about going initially. It makes graduation and college feel more real,” she says. Watson is excited about her future college life, but can’t deny the fact she’s nervous about attending as well, which rings true for many other high school seniors. “College is a new experience and that can be scary,” she explains. “But orientation was actually really great and calmed my nerves down,” Watson adds.

College orientation is an exciting, important experience for college freshman. It gives students a chance to get their questions answered, pick their schedules, and make new friends before the school year starts. No matter how students feel about going to college for the first time, orientation is an inevitable experience that will only make you more prepared for your future. As Buena’s seniors continue to attend orientation not only in Arizona, but around the nation, they begin to get a sneak peek of their lives after high school.
