The ending of the school year means a new beginning for many Buena students: cheerleading tryouts. While the tryout was an uphill battle for some, consisting of an evaluation on both a candidate’s personality and athletic skills, many young men and women have demonstrated their perseverance. These tryouts were different from past years, as athletes were also vying for a spot on Buena’s competition team, a team for both JV and varsity members who will compete together throughout the year. The 2019-2020 tryouts could be regarded as overwhelming, but it was nothing for those who have earned a spot on Buena’s cheer team.

Finding out you’ve made the team is an exciting start to the cheer season. Instead of finding out if they are on a team the day of tryouts like in past years, candidates had to instead wait for an email explaining their results. For Junior Aliyah Molinares, she explains that she felt, “really happy and excited.” It’s hard not to feel that excitement, and many other cheerleaders felt similarly. Junior Nicole Sandoval explains, “I was just really excited in general because I’ve been super excited to start this upcoming season.” Junior McKenna Heck says, “I’m ecstatic to spend my senior season on not only the varsity squad, but our new competition team.”

Many cheerleaders have their own personal goals for this season as the new school year slowly gets closer and closer. Molinares hopes to, “become a more positive person, meet new people, and to make the best of my senior year.” Sandoval has her own goals as well. She says, “I really want to get more tumbling, and I really want to work on partner stunting a lot more this season.” The athleticism required for cheerleading is clear, and yet, Heck still hopes to gain even more intense skills. She says, “This year I really just want to become a stronger athlete in order to be a better teammate. I want to nail more advanced stunts, advanced tumbling, and make the Buena cheer presence felt more within school sports and activities!”

Heck, Molinares, and Sandoval are all returning cheerleaders, and they have a lot to look forward to and expect as the cheer season kicks off. Sandoval explains she’s looking forward to, “the competition team because last season’s competition was super fun.” It goes without saying that cheerleading requires plenty of dedication and endurance. That does not stop cheerleaders from looking forward to what’s to come. Molinares says, “I’m looking forward to learning new skills, cheering at the football games, and overall a good season.” Heck hopes to learn new skills and attend competitions as well, explaining, “I’m looking forward to learning new skills, becoming a stronger athlete, getting close with my new teammates, going to competitions, and ending my high school career with an absolutely fantastic season.”

Despite the school year coming to a close, it is far from the end for Buena’s 2019-2020 cheerleaders. Beginning from tryouts in April, many students are working hard to better themselves and create an amazing experience for both cheerleaders and the rest of the student body. Congratulations to all who earned their spot on a Buena cheerleading team!
